I am wondering what is most strange: Sitting here in July 2007 and thinking back to May 2001 when I together with Joshua Nash started editing a manuscript then called "Dialectical Ecolinguistics"; OR sitting in May 2001 and thinking forth to the publication of a book at some point in the future! Anyway, last week it arrived from Continuum, the book "Language, Ecology and Society," authored by Jørgen Christian Bang and Jørgen Døør. What started out as a volume of "selected essays" has grown into a monograph, not least due to the collaboration with Continuum.I think most authors recognize this strange emotional mix of joy - finished at last! - and paralysis: now nothing can be changed, no mistakes corrected, no formulations reformulated. As Bang and Døør quote Wittgenstein in Chapter 9: "the time is past in which I could improve it," 'it' being his "Philosophical Investigations." Well, Witgenstein didn't access to the Web! Luckily, this website gives us the opportunity of re-thinking, discussing, dialoging, amending, etc. I hope that you both will enjoy our book and also find these web resources useful. And most of all, it is my sincere hope that the theoretical tradition presented in the book and here will function as an invitation to do linguistics in a caring and sharing way. If so, you are very welcome to contribute to the website and to the tradition of Dialectical Linguistics. | |
